Our Cause

The Surfing Madonna Beach Run is about more than just fun, fitness and community, it’s an opportunity for you to help keep our oceans clean, our coastline protected, and to provide opportunities for disabled kids and adults to experience the healing power of the ocean. 100% of the proceeds from this run go directly to the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting our ocean from the harmful effects of pollution, and to cultivating new ocean advocates. Run (or walk) knowing that your participation is making a positive impact on the world!

Surf Camp for Special Needs Children

Every summer, Surfing Madonna Oceans Project hosts an incredible surf camp for kids with special needs at Moonlight Beach. This completely free program is an opportunity for youths to build their self-confidence as they learn a new skill and have fun! For many of the children, surfing is a dream they never thought possible and realizing this dream can be life changing. To date, we have surfed with over 1,000 kids with special needs from San Diego County. With your help, we will be able to create this incredible opportunity for many more.

Marine Mammal Rescue & Release

Each year sea lions wash up on the shores of our beaches and without human intervention, these animals would likely die. Surfing Madonna provides North County with marine mammal rescue cages so that these animals can be rescued, rehabilitated, and released back in to the ocean. Surfing Madonna is committed to protecting the ocean, and all the amazing life living in it. To date, over 300 rescues and releases have taken place.

Coastline Protection & Clean Up Program

Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is committed to protecting our coast lines and keeping our beaches clean. In addition to donating money towards various ocean conservation projects, Surfing Madonna hosts regular beach clean ups, and funds an annual Ocean Conservation Summer Camp for kids. The Conservation Camp is one of many of our efforts to increase awareness of the threats pollution poses to our ocean and marine life and to cultivate new ocean advocates. Together, we can save the ocean!

Floating Beach Wheelchairs

Ocean Program for Disabled Veterans & Adults

In this program, Surfing Madonna staff and volunteers take disabled veterans, and adults with special needs on epic ocean adventures which includes swimming, snorkeling and surfing at Moonlight Beach! Surfing Madonna has also donated floating beach wheelchairs (as shown in the photo) and mobility mats (plastic walkways)  to the water’s edge to make the ocean accessible to all.  For many of the participants, this is the first opportunity they have had to enjoy the ocean since becoming disabled. Everyone should be able to experience the healing power of the ocean, and this year-round program helps make that possible.
